Silent but deadly! This 30-30 Win ammunition by Hornady is for hunters who prefer taking a “subtler” approach while they’re bagging medium-size game.
Hornady developed their own special bullet for their Subsonic line of ammunition: the Sub-X. This 175 grain bullet features the polymer Flex Tip, which has a flat nose profile for optimal functionality in lever-action rifles. The Flex Tip is positioned over a deep nose cavity, into which it rams during impact to yield wide positive expansion.
The Sub-X’s grooved jacket is designed to facilitate expansion following impact velocities as low as 900 fps, which this round accomplishes at ranges beyond 200 yards. At higher velocities you can count on the Sub-X’s toothed cannelure and InterLock ring to prevent core/jacket separation.
This cartridge hits a muzzle velocity of 1,050 out of a 24” barrel – shorter barrel, slower muzzle velocity. Hornady’s Subsonic ammo is quiet even if your rifle hasn’t got a suppressor, and its special propellant is formulated to reduce muzzle flash.

Good round for home defense. I live in a suburb and am concerned that if fired in defense of my home and loved ones that anything fired won’t go through my neighbors house.

First time shooting 30-30 today, and this was one of the boxes I shot. I had shot boxes of Federal 150 and Remington 170, so when I went to shoot these, I was thoroughly surprised by the difference in recoil. I know they’re listed as sub-sonic, but I was not expecting the sheer difference in recoil. The recoil is much more controllable, and makes for a much easier follow up shot. That, and combined with hunting videos I’ve seen of people taking larger hogs and deer with this stuff, I would gladly use this as home defense ammo as well as it’s normal use for hunting game.
Only con, is that I’ve seen this cheaper in stores, but actually finding it ton stores is unreliable, so only a knock of 1 star at most for affordability.
