22 WMR ammunition, also known as .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire or simply .22 Magnum or .22 Mag, is a high velocity rimfire cartridge first introduced in 1959. Almost from the beginning, it was used in both revolvers and long guns and developed an excellent reputation as a step up in power from the .22 LR (though it is certainly louder and somewhat more expensive as well). The .22 WMR uses a long case which holds a respectable amount of propellant, giving it significantly more ballistic potential than shorter rimfire cartridges; at the same time, it is still a relatively quiet round that produces low felt recoil.
